The Fine Art of Decluttering
The bedroom is your personal space to relax and unwind. Ironically, it also tends to be ground zero for clutter. It’s where we undress, read in bed and keep piles of papers we need to go through…not to mention our many electronic devices with their various chargers and power cords. Serenity is hard to attain when you can’t find the TV remote (hint: it’s under that issue of Vogue you were reading last night).
If this sounds familiar, then it’s time to get your clutter under control!
Decluttering isn’t just tidying up. It’s the fine art of strategically organizing and simplifying your living space.
Organizing your clutter isn’t hard with the right furniture and accessories. It’s amazing what you can do with a few drawers and a decorative box or two. But simplifying your organizational process is equally important. The more complicated you make things, the less likely you are to stick with it. It’s okay to put the TV remotes in the same drawer as your books and magazines – the important thing is that you know where they are!
Here are some suggestions to get you started…
Keep an attractive laundry basket next to the closet. Seeing a pile of dirty clothes makes you think about laundry. And no one feels relaxed when they are thinking about laundry.
Make sure your night stand has a drawer or two for tucking away the things that you like to keep handy: cell phones and tablets, books and magazines, reading glasses…
Don’t have a night stand with drawers? Try a silk bed caddy! (This one comes with a luxurious matching eye mask.)
Are your drawers and caddies full? Some pretty baskets can handle the overflow. They’re also great for storing extra blankets and pillows by your bed.
Place a bench at the end of the bed. It’s an excellent spot to put decorative pillows when you’re ready to turn in for the night. (But not that towel you just used – you have a laundry basket for that!)
If you keep a desk in your bedroom, assign a drawer for your laptop and papers you are currently using, then another for things you can get to later. This would also be a good spot to keep your power cords and chargers.
No need to keep things completely Spartan! Accessories can do the double duty of adding personal style as well as organization. Shagreen boxes with beautiful agate lids are an elegant touch in any room. They are also a perfect hiding place for your bedside medications, tissues, hand lotion, lip balm... all the items you use each night.
Have a lot of jewelry on display? Try organizing it in an exquisitely ornate jewelry box!
Decluttering is summed up nicely in the old saying, a place for everything and everything in its place. Now that all your things are in their designated places, you can snuggle into bed and bask in the luxury of knowing that TV remote is in the left side drawer. Right where it belongs.
