Bringing Hygge to your Home

You’ve probably heard the latest buzzword “Hygge Decor.” This trendy Scandinavian decor is popping up in decorator magazines and blogs all over the world. But what is Hygge? And how can you bring it to your home? (And how do you pronounce it?) We did the work so you don’t have to. Here’s your handy dandy guide to all things Hygge style:

It’s pronounced “hoog-uh”

For us uninitiated Anglophiles, this Danish word means “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” This Danish word for cozy brings to mind soft textures, low lighting, and a cozy cup of cocoa or an indulgent cocktail. It’s the interior design version of “self-care” and while in the midst of this COVID crisis, I think we could all use as much self-care as possible!

Easy ways to create a Hygge Home

Ready to bring the Scandinavian Hygge lifestyle to your home? Experts say to start by catering to as many of your senses as possible -- sight, smell, and touch are the easiest to tap into when it comes to home design. At Bedside Manor, we've been focusing on creating relaxing and restorative spaces for over 30 years. We've found that you can make your space cozy by adding just a few simple touches.

- Candles and diffusers
Forego harsh overhead lighting or even bright lamps in favor of glowy candles in a welcoming scent like Nest’s Classic Bamboo. Exquisitely scented and long-lasting, Nest candles are gorgeous on the bedside table or your home office desktop.

Not a fan of an open flame but still want a soothing fragrance? Opt for a pretty yet practical diffuser like Antica Farmacista's in a natural fragrance like Lemon Verbena or Bergamot & Ocean

- Soft textured throws
What’s cozier than a fluffy throw blanket? Wrap yourself up in a brushed alpaca throw from Lands Downunder. They're irresistibly soft, sumptuous, and naturally retain heat.

You could also opt for the luxurious feel of velvet with Kevin O’Brien’s velvet throws. These one-of-a-kind throws utilize traditional embroidery, felting, dyeing, and weaving and even improve indigenous communities through sustainable partnerships.

- Neutral and natural
Bring the cozy, contented vibe to your bedroom with layers of soft, neutral tones like the stone-washed cotton in Matouk’s Merida blanket.

Or try Peacock Alley’s best-selling All Seasons Blanket in shades like flint and linen. These remarkably plush blankets are made from 100% brushed Egyptian cotton.

Another piece of the Hygge puzzle is natural yet aesthetically pleasing materials that bring the outdoors in. In the bathroom, add a smooth cedar massager to increase circulation during bathing or elevate your shower experience with a natural sea sponge.

Need a soft place to rest your feet?

Toss Pine Cone Hill’s braided rope pouf near your favorite comfy chair draped with Matouk’s chunky knit Orla throw and voila: Hygge achieved! Now, where’s that cocktail?
